We are absolutely delighted to announce that Studio Gedye won three 2015 RIBA regional Awards for Architectural Excellence!
The RIBA Regional Awards are ‘given to buildings across the UK recognised as important contributions to architecture’.Our awards were for:
Hathersage Yoga Studio (RIBA East Midlands regional award). A distinctive studio space for yoga classes on the site of a garage in Hathersage. The curved building was inspired by the shape of the site which has a footpath along the rear edge and the studio space faces south and is lofty, giving an uplifting sense of space for the students practicing yoga.
Sum Studios (RIBA Yorkshire regional award). Heeley Development Trust wanted to create an example of what a truly ‘green’ workplace could look like. The listed buildings were successfully converted into offices to encourage local creative and digital businesses to develop and grow.
We also won the RIBA Yorkshire Sustainability Award for Sum Studios which is awarded to the project which ‘goes beyond statutory requirements and demonstrates elegantly and durably the principles of sustainable architecture’.
The judges commented that: “It’s clear that a holistic view of sustainable design was fundamental to the team’s approach in this project (for Sum Studios). As well as achieving low running costs with natural ventilation and rain water harvesting, this project goes far beyond architecture and has delivered a project that is an asset to the community.”
Kath Morgan, the owner of Hathersage Yoga Studio was delighted that her building won and said: “My yoga studio is possibly the most beautiful building in the village. The natural and local building materials along with the subtle curve make it sit perfectly in place and it is hard to imagine that it hasn’t always been here.
“I get so many comments from students about what a wonderful space it is to come and do yoga because it really does bring the outside in with the huge glass doors and its stunning views over the valley. Simon’s interpretation of what I wanted was spot on and he guided me skilfully through the whole process from conception, through planning to the actual build”.
Commenting on the RIBA’s announcement Simon Gedye said: “It feels very special to be recognised by the RIBA for designs; the team works hard to create inspiring places for people to live and work and it is great to be recognised for the quality of our designs. I am delighted!”
