Architect Studio Gedye | Buildings beautifully designed for their surroundings

Studio Gedye design buildings with soul! We are proud of our jam-packed trophy cabinet but prouder still of the great relationships we build with clients, planners and contractors to design great places for people to live and work.

Architects based in the Peak District National Park, Studio Gedye has a strong track record of securing planning permissions in challenging situations and successfully negotiating consent for work in sensitive settings and listed buildings.

Outstanding design is our passion. As architectural conservation specialists, we are skilled at minimising the impact of our buildings on the environment. We are proud to be part of the Passivhaus movement, the gold standard in energy efficiency.

Welcome to Architect Studio Gedye!

Based in the Peak District National Park on the edge of Sheffield, Studio Gedye enjoys a hard-earned reputation for outstanding architectural design on a diverse range of projects that include new houses, extensions and alterations, city bars, national visitor centres, arts centres, barn and chapel conversions, community centres, schools, and historic buildings.

This process starts with us getting an understanding of what you want to achieve and fully reviewing the site or buildings we are working with. We have years of experience, a passion for design and great relationships with the many people it takes to bring a project to life, just look at our client testimonials and they will hopefully tell you more about working with us then we ever could!

The Architect practice’s work has been recognised with several RIBA Awards, many for design excellence but the one we are proud of is ‘best client relationship’ for our work with a community group working to transform their village centre.

We have won Sheffield Design Awards and were proud to be commended in the RIBA Forgotten Spaces competition for our collaboration with the late artist Keith Hayman.

What we do
& how we do it

Whatever the size or ambition of your project, we work hard to add value with good design that works with your budget; we will identify possibilities and creative solutions that you might not see for yourself that will really make your project a standout success.

PROJECTS WE LOVE!

  • New House at Stumperlowe Park Road in Sheffield

A new house constructed in the garden of an existing property, designed with privacy in mind. Careful positioning ensures the home does not overlook neighbouring properties, preserving the sense of seclusion and maintaining harmonious relationships with the surroundings. Thoughtful design prioritises both comfort and respect for privacy.

  • Lodge in Sheffield

We designed a linking extension connecting a historic house and coach house on a prominent corner within the conservation area.

  • Transformation of Cottage and outbuildings, Hathersage

We transformed disused outbuildings and a leaky lean-to conservatory into inviting, functional living spaces. Open-sided outbuildings were converted into comfortable rooms, seamlessly integrated with the main home.

  • Sum Studios

The Grade II listed former Anns Grove Board School has been transformed into a vibrant hub for the Heeley Development Trust. This historic building now serves as a dynamic center for community, arts, and business initiatives. Preserving its architectural heritage, the space has been repurposed to foster creativity, collaboration, and enterprise. The redevelopment aligns with the Trust’s commitment to revitalizing local neighborhoods, providing opportunities for residents and businesses

  • Destination Longshaw

Renovation and new construction at this Grade II National Trust property in the Peak District National Park aim to enhance the visitor experience. Situated on the outskirts of Sheffield, this cherished site will benefit from thoughtful updates and additions, blending heritage preservation with modern improvements.

  • Heart for Hathersage – A New Village Centre

Driven by a dedicated local community group, the effort involved extensive consultations with villagers to shape a shared vision for the village center and secure planning approval. Hathersage Parish Council took on the project, rallying support and raising the funds needed to bring the community’s vision to life.

What our clients are saying about us

“Studio Gedye had some fantastic design ideas which allowed us to transform a very nice property into an exceptional one. The main element of the design – and kitchen-cum-sitting space – is used all day, every day and we love it.”

John, Hathersage

“Throughout my time working with Simon I have found him to be exceptionally thorough in his work, with a great eye for combining new with old in a sympathetic yet creative manner. He understands the importance of retaining the individuality and character of our ancient buildings, demonstrating an eye for detail, ranging from the smallest window latch to a fully integrated extension to a listed building.”

Project Manager

“Your knowledge of what was important in terms of architectural features and then feeding that into negotiations in terms of what to keep, what to enhance and what to lose was invaluable. Your conservation lead approach was very well received by the planners and went a long way to winning their trust and support.”

Dorsia Homes

“Our new home was to be built on our back garden – a steeply sloping site with no guarantee planning permission would be granted. Simon produced a ‘multi level’ yet low rise design that sat within the surrounding ground almost hidden from neighbours. Not only did his creativity result in us gaining permission – we now have a stunning looking home which has provided us with all the important aspects we asked Simon for…. a unique design, a vast and versatile open living space, rooms full of light, and privacy.”

Jed Furniss

“Simon responded to our brief with a creative design capturing the style we were looking for as well as addressing the practicalities we’d highlighted. The outcome is a home that is a joy to live in. We particularly appreciate the imaginative use of space and the sympathetic juxtaposition of contemporary materials with the original Georgian architecture. His thoughtful and collaborative approach, together with his experience of the planning process, made the process less stressful. It was a pleasure to work with Studio Gedye.”
